A letter from the editors

Why we built three tiers — and why the free one stays free.

We get the question a lot, so let's answer it on the record: Hentai Mania is not a paywall, and it never will be. The free tier has been the spine of this place since we opened the archive in 2009 out of a small office on Market Street. What the paid tiers do is keep the lights on for the work the free tier can't carry alone — paying our 28 full-time staff and 41 contributing curators, funding the 17 editors and 4 licensed translators in Tokyo, Seoul, and Berlin who turn over roughly 300 freshly translated chapters a week, and underwriting the rare, hard-to-clear doujinshi that a strictly ad-supported site would never take the risk on.

If you've been here a while you already know what the curation team actually does. We are the people who read the submissions, check the DMCA clearance against our 92,000-work library, decide which of the 240+ tags a series belongs in, and remove anything that breaks the published content policy — usually within 11 minutes, around the clock. The paid tiers don't buy you a different archive. They buy you a faster door into it: early-tag previews, an ad-light reading mode, a print zine mailed to your door four times a year, and access to the small handful of translated doujinshi we keep exclusive to paying members because the rightsholders asked us to.

That's the whole pitch, written out plainly. No countdown timer, no "limited offer" pop-up, no surprise redirect to a tier you didn't pick. You came here to read. We just want to tell you, in print, what the Club is and what it isn't.

Letters to the Editor

What Club members keep telling us

Across 38,400 verified reviews, the same three notes arrive in our inbox every week. We've reprinted them verbatim — names changed, handwriting kept.

  1. "I joined for the early-tag access and stayed because the reading experience is genuinely ad-light — no pop-unders, no bait-and-switch redirects, just the work. After two years I'm still opening the weekly digest before my morning coffee."

Yuki M. Casual reader · Club member since 2023 · Osaka
  2. "My royalties cover the rent. That's not a slogan — that's the line on a spreadsheet I share with my partner every quarter. The Club funds roughly 300 translated chapters a week across the indie doujinshi space, and as a translator, I can tell you the rates are paid on time and the editorial notes are actually read."

Sora K. Contributing translator · 14 chapters shipped via Club funding · Berlin
  3. "I came in expecting another tube site with a paywall bolted on. What I found was a small editorial team that emails me back, credits me in the colophon, and ships a print zine four times a year that I'm embarrassed to admit I keep on my shelf. Mania Club Black is the first subscription I've kept past the free trial in years."

Ren A. Illustrator & Club Black member · 3 features in the printed zine · Seoul

The Free Tier

Start with the free tier. Upgrade when you're ready.

The free Mania Club account is the same archive 6.4M monthly readers use — the weekly digest, the tagged library, the community. We add Mania Club only when you ask for it.

  • Cancel anytime, no email tag-of-shame.

Self-serve in your account dashboard, two clicks, no retention call. We'll send one confirmation so you know it went through, and that's the last you hear from billing.

  • No spam, ever — only the Mania Digest.

One weekly editorial email. No third-party list rentals, no affiliate blasts slipped into the footer, no "you might also like" carousel. The digest goes out on Sundays and that's the entire inbox footprint.

  • 18+ confirmed at the door, not buried in ToS.

We ask for your age before the first chapter loads. No minors on the archive, no surprise upsells, no ad-tech fingerprinting — the same policy that's earned us 99.2% uptime and 4.7/5 across 38,400 Trustpilot reviews.
